Sad, Happy, Inspiring Reflections
Goodness, February has come and gone! My grandmother used to always say that as we age time moved faster and it sure feels like that this month.
January ended with freezing temperatures, snow and a brilliant new moon burst in the sky through February 2nd. By February 3rd, the snow was melting and fog hovered over the pond as warm and cold air touched.
With all the cold weather, finally assembled tabletop loom and created my first weaving piece in a while.
I don’t see many geese yet, but the blue heron is out and about. It feels like spring is coming soon.
Reflecting on life, where I come from straight out of the Cuney Homes, 3rd Ward, Houston, Texas, where I’ve been and may go before my last sunset. So many thoughts, February 10, as I flew to the DC area to bid two friends that I lost in January farewell. And although a solemn occasion, was able to see a few friends. Had lunch with Dianna and Deirdra after one funeral. Breakfast with Mary the next morning but forgot to take a picture.
And my spirit was lifted after visiting the Amy Sherald exhibit at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Love that museum and loved getting the opportunity to see Sherald’s work.
Arrived home, February 15, to a night sky glowing almost like Northern lights. And after a day of rest, had the energy to start cleaning up remnants of last year’s summer garden. By the time I pulled up tree-like okra stalks, I was tired and left the ridge gourd vines for another day.
By February 20, I was kind of sort of back to my old self, cooking some and sowing seeds in preparation for spring/summer garden. Seeds sowed that day are growing quite nicely. Definitely feel spring coming, especially when you see bees on dandelions outside.
Tried my hand at making mofongo after Deirdra made some during my trip. It turned out okay; could have added more garlic. I served it first with soup and the second time with curried shrimp. My friend, Inge, visited over the weekend and baked a 2-ingredient sour dough bread that turned out delicious. There’s nothing like a late morning breakfast with out bread slathered with butter, olives, and coffee. Must learn how to make this bread!
This last week of February has been lifeing as they say. My brother and his son are both in the hospital; but they’re doing better. Sunday, February 22, I revived the Table & Plate Project Delta podcast after a one-year hiatus. And this past Monday, the Home Place Quilting Bee Community Project workshops started back up.
Even though it feels like the month went by quickly, it’s been full of sad, happy, inspiring moments. As we continue to weather the storm of this constant dystopian barrage, the rosemary survived the ice storm and the first daffodils for the season bloomed today in my garden. Blessings to everyone and always remember to do what’s best to nurture you, family, friends and your community. Peace, wisdom, gratitude be with us all.
