Spring Feelings

So deep in my feelings, the month of April ended before I knew it and it’s May already. There were lots of April showers. Kept getting these flood alerts on my phone that had these May ending dates. Curious, Emi and I went down to the levee on April 20 for a walk only to discover that a good portion of parking lot, boat launching area and Schelben Park were under water! We went back this past Sunday and there was even more water. We walked on the levee a bit, then sat by the truck and looked out at the water for a while. It was a beautiful, pleasant day. Other days when it wasn’t raining, we’ve walked in the Cypress Preserve.

Started the spring garden in late April. Netted some of the smaller plants but that still didn’t keep the critters from devouring most of the cucumber plants in the raised bed and cantaloupe plants in the ground. Started more seeds and if I have to will buy some plants. Next time, need to use denser protective netting. Spring, also, brings the hatching of goslings and this year there were 2, then 7, and lastly 3. Video posted on the Three Blessings Yoga Farm & Wellness YouTube channel highlights the garden and wildlife so far this spring, https://youtu.be/14481jh851E.

Another highlight last month was going to the Eudora Wetley House to see and hear an author lecture by Jesmyn Ward. Really didn’t know what to expect but she was wonderful. Wetley’s House was a perfect venue with its beautiful garden space. Jesmyn Ward is a native Mississippian. She talked about how her grandmother was her first storyteller and how those stories always spoke to telling your truth. I finished her book, “Let Us Descend,” which really touched my soul; written vivid images of slavery’s horrors, foraging for mushrooms and other food, the water and its connection to freedom. About to begin reading her book, “Sing, Unburied, Sing.”

During these times, with what’s going on in the country, my solace has been daily walks with Emi, yoga practice particularly meditation, preparing the spring garden, and art quilting. I’m working on the last of Ma Tank’s Indigo Dreams series, which represents somewhat the diaspora of my maternal line. Amazing that I’ve dreamed how the pieces should look and that instead of my original naming them #1 - #3, each should be given a name. Ma Tank's Indigo Dreams #1 is called "Pathways from Home"; #2 is "Divine Feminine; and #3 is Mama, Water, Earth. This last one has come with some challenges that had to be addressed. Thinking that’s it’s my people talking to me and saying everything doesn’t have to be perfect. And just like that, I read somewhere yesterday that the Amish intentionally created errors in their quilts to acknowledge that nothing was perfect. Being in all my feelings these days, moments like that lighten my spirit. You can see all my finished art quilts at Portfolio and Gift Shop — Three Blessings Yoga Farm.
