Finding Peace Through Fiber Art

February is rainy season for the Mississippi Delta, and it looks like March is becoming more so as well. The ground is so saturated wet there isn’t much that can be done in the garden or on the land.  Fantastically, this has given me more time to spread my creative fiber art wings.

I finished a queen-sized quilt for a friend. I’d only done small art quilt pieces and completing a whole quilt was amazing and very fulfilling. He wanted basically a throw made out of ties worn throughout his career and sent me 66. Two videos were shared on my YouTube channel highlighting the process in December (Creative Expression: First Full Quilt Project - Part 1 (youtube.com)) and February (Creative Expression: First Full Quilt Project - Part 2 (youtube.com)). The quilt was finished towards the end of February and my friend liked it. I’m sharing it now that he’s seen it.

Embracing the fiber artist in me, I submitted an art quilt piece to the 17th Annual African American Fiber Art Exhibition to be held in May/June 2024 in North Charleston, SC. The theme this year is “Celebrating Black Music!” Don’t know if my piece will be accepted, but thought I’d give it a shot. Most importantly, I enjoyed creating the piece. Oh, and I can’t show it because entries can’t be posted anywhere for now.

A friend asked the other day when I was going to start back weaving. I had all kinds of excuses as to why I wasn’t. At the end of the day, the voice in my head was saying why not. Pulled out the Saori loom and got started. All the wonderful contemplative feelings rushed over me. I'm weaving, again!

My small portfolio is growing. With all the chaos, in the world I love the peace of mind that creating something with my hands gives me.

Peace and blessings.
